Announcement: Musical Director, Canon Zachary Ullery

After 13 years with the Paris Choral Society, we are sad to announce that Canon Zachary Ullery will be leaving Paris this summer. Zach is moving on to exciting new adventures back in the USA with his wife, Dr Joy-Leilani Garbutt.

We want to thank Zach for all he has done. He has continually developed the PCS, driving our musical standards, creating exciting programs and bringing the best out of every member. We will miss his kindness and humor, as well as outstanding musical talent.

Below is a letter from Zach and you can find a note from the Cathedral Dean, James Harla, here.

You can leave Zach a farewell message by adding to this online card and you can also leave him a gift here – both will be available until the end of July.

The Board and Bureau will move in the coming days to appoint an Interim Music Director for our autumn concert ahead of a fuller appointment process in due course.

But for now, the Paris Choral Society want to send Zach and Joy our very best for the future.

A Letter from Zach

Dear PCS Family,

I first joined the Paris Choral Society in September of 2008 as a singer in the bass section and at the first rehearsal I immediately knew I was in a very special place. I had joined a group of talented, committed, caring, and dedicated people who shared a common goal: making beautiful music together in community (and having a great time doing so!).

In the years since that first rehearsal, I’ve had the immense pleasure of leading this incredible group of humans and I will forever treasure the extraordinary experiences we’ve shared – rehearsals, concerts, Covid Zoom rehearsals (!), virtual choirs, Sainte-Chapelle, living composers in residence, world premieres, and the constant discovery of new music. Wow – what an incredible adventure we’ve shared!

It has been such a joy and delight to serve as your Conductor and Musical Director for the past 13 years. You have been my constant musical companions on this journey called life and we’ve mutually watched each other grow, mature, and change. I think that has been the greatest gift of all – our mutual love and support for each other.

I cannot thank you enough for the pleasure and honor of serving with you. I count you as some of the most instructive teachers and mentors in life and in music.

With a heart full of love and gratitude for all of you,

Zach
